Attacking Runs to Get in Behind

As an attacker, your ability to think a move or two ahead—to see where the defensive line is and how you can time a run to get in behind freely to receive a pass—is a magical part of the game. It's using your game intelligence to outfox your opponent. This was a part of the game that I loved as a player. Weighing up where our team were with the ball, where it would move next, seeing the space between defenders, timing the run, and then giving a massive shout for the ball to get the attention of your teammate for the pass.

Today we see brilliant players with this ability who are a joy to watch. Here are a couple of different video examples:

  1. Watch how David Silva and other midfield players see the space and bend their run to give themselves even more time as they run onto the pass behind the defenders.

  2. Watch how Alexander Isak explains his centre-forward runs in behind. As the forward who is up against the central defenders directly, he explains how he'll pull behind one of them on their blind side or sometimes dart between the two defenders to get onto a through ball.

These are enjoyable educational videos, with plenty to learn from and to practice in your training sessions. Enjoy.
