How to be Physical to Win the Ball!

ree

Football is a physical sport; you have to be strong and determined to win against your opponent.  It's not easy, it takes energy, guts, persistence and a competitive streak to not lose the duel.

As you move through age groups and higher levels of competition, it can feel like "I'm not strong enough, they're faster, I have no time on the ball, they're bigger than me."  However, the great news is that each level is just a level that you get used to quickly, and adapt to, and if you have the determination, excel in.

This video by Unisport, shows some exercises that are good with a team mate to get used to:

  • Use of the shoulder and arms to keep your space

  • Stepping across the opponent to protect and get in front

  • Leaning in with a low centre of gravity to be strong and balanced.

You can have some fun with these exercises. Literally get your opponent to do all they can to push you off the ball. If you have your body and stance right, it's very difficult for them to do that.

Also invite friends/players who are older, stronger than you to practice at this. That way you can really dig in on the physical aspect, whilst getting to and protecting the ball under control.
