Rodri began his youth career at Atlético Madrid’s academy in 2007 at 11 years of age. However, he was released in 2013 at 17 years old due to concerns about his physical strength. Isn’t that hard to fathom when you see him now at 6ft 3in (1.91m) and a huge physical presence in Man City and Spain's midfield?
He then joined Villarreal, where he made his senior debut in 2015 and became a key player in their squad. In 2018, Rodri returned to Atlético Madrid, signing a five-year contract for around €20 million plus bonuses. The rest is history—becoming Man City's largest signing at the time and going on to win multiple Premier Leagues, the treble in 2023, and the Euros with Spain this year.
Not bad for a young lad rejected at 17, is it? What an inspiration for players who have been let go or not taken on by clubs. Rodri has commented that he took the rejection and feedback of not being strong enough as motivation and worked hard to build up that strength and steel to complement his technical ability. It’s turned him into the Euro Player of the Tournament this year and arguably the best central midfielder in the world.
Pep Guardiola has stated that Rodri is "irreplaceable" due to his balance of defense and attack, coupled with his intelligence and calmness under pressure. It will be interesting to see how City adapts without him now that he’s out for the entire season. Watch Rodri himself talk about his key focus areas in this video. Note, in particular his emphasis on the ability to pass accurately using various techniques—left foot, right foot, drive, chip, and short passes. As a top midfielder, technical ability in each of these is a must. Don’t see not being proficient in these skills on both feet as an option. Practice, practice, practice until you are the best in your team and your competition.
In the One2Pro App, we break down each of these techniques step-by-step. You can simply watch and learn from the videos or work with our coaches to guide you on how to improve using your own practice videos. It’s easy to follow and always filled with encouragement.
