Set Pieces – A Beautiful Thing!

It's a year filled with set-piece emphasis from the top clubs around the world. Arsenal and their dedicated set-piece coach are getting it so right, it's making all the difference for them at the top of the Premier League. What is it that makes them and others so successful?
You need a talented set-piece taker — a player who will consistently deliver the ball exactly where it needs to be, and at the right speed and height. Declan Rice is the prime example of this at Arsenal.
You need to have a well-drilled team that knows exactly where that ball will arrive, so the key players get there at the right moment to meet the ball ahead of the defenders.
Create confusion for the defenders. You'll see, in examples from various Arsenal plays, multiple players making runs to crowd an area, sometimes blocking the opposition.
Anticipate! Player's time their runs and positions to anticipate a flick-on or pass, so they are in space and ahead of defenders, not behind them.
Mix it up. They vary the approach. Like an American football team, they have a playbook of set-pieces to call on — that everyone knows and can execute. As an individual attacking player, make sure you are tuned in and know your role exactly — and those around you.
