Visualise for a Power Shot

One of the most thrilling things you can see at a football match is a ball flying through the air and hitting the back of the net at a ferocious, blink-of-an-eye speed. As a player, those goals stay with you forever. They are so special.

Think about it: you are far away from the target, which is small at this distance. In your mind, you visualise the target—the step next to the ball, slightly ahead, to allow the ball to roll forward, whilst your striking foot makes its way from back to front to connect. Your laces are pointed vertically to the ball for a clean connection, your chin over the ball to ensure your body is over it and to keep the shot low. Your hand moves from centre waist out fast on the angle as you strike. You skip forward, both feet leaving the ground, but keeping your striking foot close to the grass for control. You watch the ball rocket towards the goal.

All of these thoughts happen in a subconscious split second as you approach the ball, and if the thousands of hours of practice have been perfected, the ball will fly exactly where you visualised. Amazing, isn’t it—what a skill.

Watching a couple of goals from last night’s Premier League reminded me of the thrill of these types of goals. Check out:
